U.S. Traffic and the Need for Road Services

Roadways make up a significant part of the United States living. As the primary form of transportation, paved roads continue to proliferate across the country, and traffic grows heavier. Without roads, the country has no way to run its civilization. Asphalt pavement quality, traffic, and other factors affect how long a roadway lasts, but asphalt road services with Teniseal/Parking Striping Corporation in Maryland can help the state maintain its road safety and quality of life.

U.S. Roadways

Maryland is not the only state concerned with road safety. According to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, America contains about 4.1 million miles of public highways and nearly 615,000 bridges. Highway mileage makes up about 3 million miles. The Interstate Highway System, the largest public works project in history, accomplishes 48,053 miles, while the National Highway System accounts for at least 222,743 miles. Roadways fall under state and city jurisdictions, with federal jurisdiction only for 146,000 miles of national park, reservation, and military roads.

U.S. Traffic Statistics

Roadways and traffic alike have expanded dramatically since the 1950s. Roads and streets have increased by 22.6% since 1953, but total paved roads have tripled. Due to the increase in population, jobs outside of cities, and women in the workplace, roads have expanded, but traffic has, too. In 2015, vehicle traffic covered 3.1 trillion miles across the nation’s roads and bridges. While highways are the longest roads, it is the urban centers that receive the heaviest and most frequent traffic. Overall, personal vehicles like cars, light trucks, and motorcycles make up over 80% of all transportation in the U.S. today.

Asphalt Durability

Traffic takes its toll on asphalt, but how long can asphalt pavement really last? Commercial pavement construction differs depending on the traffic load expected, but asphalt typically lasts between 25-30 years before it requires replacing. Unfortunately, the 2015 Conditions and Performance Report announced in 2017 that under 20% of highways, 25% of arterial roads, and 40% of collector roads were in poor condition.
